We have examined, via a qualitative methodology, registrar and supervisor experience with diagnoing transient ischaemic attacks (TIAs). We have also documented frequency, nature and associations of registrars seeing patients with acute TIA and are collecting data on registrars’ performance of absolute cardiovascular risk calculation. Our analysis of ReCEnT data suggest that registrars see patients with TIA very infrequently and (perhaps as a result) their management is only modestly aligned with current guidelines. Transient neurological events may not be seen frequently enough for registrars to gain facility in their management. Our qualitative work reinforces this finding and provides a schema for understanding registrars’ (and supervisors’) management approach to transient neurological events.
